CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

I’m pacing back and forth in front of the floor-to-ceiling window back at my cabin. There’s only one door, which makes me a little nervous. If someone gets in, it will be difficult for me to make an escape. I hurry to the door and triple check the lock.

I check the clock on the wall: 5:56pm.

I have spent the last half an hour at war with myself. I have a crazy urge to race to Opal Ridge in a fit of heroics. I’m sure I could find it; Dale said, ‘if you reach Opal ridge, you’ve gone too far’, it must be along the same road as Wolves Landing.

But my logical—and intuitive—side suggests I learn more; what makes it so dangerous that Gabe and Matt have called an emergency town meeting? I feel bad that Gabe is dragging the whole town into it; it’s not their mess. It’s mine and Bree’s.

Gabe didn’t say if I was welcome at the town meeting, but I’m assuming not. I’m not a resident of the town and have no connections here. But just because I may not be welcome, doesn’t mean I won’t attend. I don’t even need to get close to the meeting if I can figure out how to use the strange super hearing I sometimes get.

I have been practicing by focusing all my attention on my ears and the sounds around me. I think I’m getting better; I thought I heard a squirrel run up a tree earlier. It could have just been the refrigerator making noises, though. I have an hour to perfect it. Easy peasy. Right?

I thought either Gabe or Sadie would show up here, intent on the newcomer having a babysitter, but I haven’t seen either of them. I even stop pacing a few times to peek out the glass front door; no one is there.

It’s disheartening. I thought Gabe and I had a connection. A strong one. I must have imagined it; if we did have a connection, he would have checked in on me. Everyone knows that if a woman storms off, you check on her. You follow her. It’s basically common knowledge. But Gabe hasn’t done either of those; obviously, I imagined there was something between us.

I really thought I had a shot with Gabe. I’ve waited for a long time to find a connection with someone; I put up with all the blind dates Bree sends me on, I struggle through relationships knowing there’s no spark. I have that with Gabe; there’s not just a spark, but a blazing wildfire burning through me. I feel like a part of me is being torn from my chest, thinking about him going through life without me by his side. A choked sob escapes.

“Get a grip, you just met the guy, Lilly,” I tell myself.

My stomach cramps, I head to the kitchen and grab a banana; my eating schedule has been out of whack since coming here; I’m starving all the time. I bite off a sizeable chunk and chew as I think.
